Can you see the aerial cableway pylons? Marmots love to rest on the concrete bases because it’s lovely and warm there. You’ll be able to see the animals better with a telescope. But don’t make too much noise: they have excellent sight and hearing. They are so cute with their soft fur and funny waddling gait. But be careful! When they sense danger, they whistle and suddenly vanish into their burrows. You’re sure to have heard their whistles today.
The marmots have lots to do before autumn arrives. They have to build up a layer of fat so they don’t get hungry during their long period of hibernation. They also gather lots of hay to pad their burrows. The marmot family sleeps for six months, cuddled closely together. Each animal lives on its own layer of fat. Around 1200 g of body fat is sufficient for the whole winter. The animal’s body temperature drops and its heart beats only 20 times per minute. During this time, the marmot wakes only a few times to relieve itself. When spring arrives and it gets warmer outside, the marmots sense that it’s time to wake up.
Now it’s not much further to the barbecue spot.
